Learn how to ensure safe and effective exercise programming for patients with a number of medical conditions and common reasons for referral onto a community-based exercise referral scheme




Course overview

This is a blended learning course, which means you will have days with your tutor and peers, there is also an element of home study, preparation and revision along with tutor and centre support. Practice and session planning is required to be carried out in your own time in between the training days and leading up to assessment. You are also required to bring a participant to the practical assessment.

This is the pre-requisite for the Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain.

This qualification is particularly aimed at Personal Trainers or Advanced Instructors who are seeking to enhance their qualifications, to give advice and prescribe and teach exercises for clients with specific medical conditions. This will give you the qualifications and knowledge you require to work alongside GPs and hospitals.

Entry requirements

  • You must have a Level 2 qualification in Fitness Instructing (or equivalent)

  2. Professional Practice for Exercise Referral
  3. Understanding medical conditions for Exercise Referral
  4. Applying the Principles of Nutrition and Physical Activity
  5. Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients
  6. Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients
  7. The signs, symptoms and basic pathology of specific stable conditions
  8. The implications and effects of specific medications relating to those conditions
  9. How to plan, deliver, manage and evaluate a safe, effective and progressive adapted physical activity programme, personalised to individual clients needs and lifestyle
  10. Principles of Nutrition to Physical Activity
