Course overview

This is a blended learning course, which means you will have days with your tutor and peers, there is also an element of home study, preparation and revision along with tutor and centre support. Practice and session planning is required to be carried out in your own time in between the training days and leading up to assessment. You are also required to bring a participant to the summative practical assessment.

Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral is 3 days with a tutor plus assessments.

Assessments = worksheets, theory papers, practical assessment and case study.

Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain is 2 attendance days with a tutor and a formative assessment on the course attendance days.

Assessment = worksheets and case study.

 

This qualification is particularly aimed at Personal Trainers, Pilates instructors or Advanced Instructors who are seeking to enhance their qualifications, to give advice and prescribe and teach exercises for clients with specific medical conditions.

This will give you the qualifications and knowledge you require to work alongside GP’s and hospitals.

This Exercise Referral qualification comprises six mandatory units:

  1. Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
  2. Professional Practice for Exercise Referral
  3. Understanding medical conditions for Exercise Referral
  4. Applying the Principles of Nutrition and Physical Activity
  5. Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients
  6. Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients

This low back pain course is aimed at experienced Instructors wishing to further their career in the health and fitness sector as a specialist instructor who can address the needs of patients/clients with low back pain.

This low back pain course will train learners to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan, conduct and review programmes to address the needs of patients/clients with low back pain.

The Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain comprises of 2 mandatory units:

  1. Prevalence and classification of low back pain.
  2. Development and Pathology of low back pain.
  3. Planning and delivering physical activity and lifestyle strategies for clients with low back pain.

Entry requirements

You must hold as a minimum a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym/Exercise to Music or Aqua) or a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training/Pilates or equivalent)

  • To development of a specific in-depth understanding of functional anatomy and biomechanics, relating to the spine and lower back.
  • To apply appropriate training approaches to plan and design progressive programmes for clients with low back pain.
  • To develop an understanding of the disease process and how activity or inactivity influences low back pain management.
  • To develop an understanding of medications, psychological/sociological factors and co-morbidities that influence an individual’s ability to exercise safely and effectively.
