We all know that it’s important to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. This involves a balanced diet and regular exercise. However, do we know which foods will compliment an active lifestyle? It’s all about balance and these 8 superfoods really do give you everything you need, and more!

Superfoods

Eat the following foods regularly and you will pretty much tick every nutrition box out there.

Blueberries

Blueberries are loaded with anti-oxidants, which protects your body against cancer, heart disease, and dementia. Blueberries are also high in water, providing hydration to the skin and cells of the body.

Apples

Research might actually confirm that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. The apple and skin are higher in fibre than a lot of other fruits, making you feel fuller for longer and therefore aiding weight loss.

Yogurt

Yogurt is known for its probiotic or live beneficial bacteria. Yogurt is shown to reduce the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract whilst maintaining stable ph levels in the body. Yogurt is also a great source of bone-building calcium and protein, which compliments a muscle-building workout very well.

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the most powerful antioxidants out there. Offering high nutritional value and low calories, broccoli is the most nutrient-dense of the vegetable superfoods. Broccoli also boosts the immune system, supports cardiovascular health and build bones. Great for that fitness regime!

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a healthy fat, which is shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol. Olive oil has also been linked to lowered insulin levels, with research showing a benefit to those suffering from type 2 diabetes. Just one tablespoon a day will provide you with the health benefits.

Eggs

An egg is made up of nearly 50% protein AND includes all eight essential amino acids, which are crucial in muscle and bone cell growth and regeneration. Eggs are also a source of calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc and vitamins A, D, E and B.

Salmon

Salmon makes an excellent food for muscle growth as it is a complete protein and easily usable by the body. The omega 3 found in Salmon also keeps your joints lubricated. Loading up on protein before exercise will minimise muscle breakdown, making it a great addition to an active lifestyle.

Oats

Oats are hearty, whole grains that contain valuable fibre to soak up unwanted fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream. Packed full of carbohydrates, oats maintain your energy for a longer period of time during your workout, whilst also slowing the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream.
